One of the first questions I get from families considering a move to Jenison is some version of: “What are the schools like?”
It’s a great question — and the answer is more interesting than most people expect.
Jenison Public Schools isn’t a one-size-fits-all district. In fact, there are four distinct public school options for elementary-aged kids, all at no cost to families. Whether your child thrives in a traditional classroom, learns best outdoors, or you’re looking for something specialized, there’s a good chance Jenison has an option worth exploring.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s available.
For most families moving to Jenison, their kids will attend one of five traditional neighborhood elementary schools: Bauerwood, Rosewood, Pinewood, Sandy Hill, or Bursley. All five serve grades K–6.
Each school has its own feel, its own staff culture, and its own tight-knit parent community. Which school your child attends depends on where you live within the district — and that’s actually something I can help you navigate when you’re house hunting.
One of the things families love most about the traditional path is the continuity. Every elementary school feeds into Jenison Junior High and then Jenison High School — so kids who start in kindergarten here grow up together all the way through graduation. That sense of community runs deep in this district.
If you’re looking for something truly unique, El Puente is one of the most exceptional public school programs in all of West Michigan.
From day one, kids learn entirely in Spanish. No prior Spanish knowledge is required for your child — or for you as a parent. The program is designed to build full bilingual proficiency over time, and it works. Spanish immersion doesn’t stop at elementary school either — the program follows students through junior high and into high school.
If El Puente is something you’re seriously considering, don’t wait to apply. Spots fill up fast and the lottery timeline comes earlier than most families expect.
This one is special — and it tends to stop parents in their tracks when they hear about it.
Wilderness Academy is an outdoor education program where kids spend the majority of their school day outside. Rain or shine. The program is run in partnership with the Outdoor Discovery Center out of Holland, and it’s built around the idea that kids learn differently — and often better — when they’re connected to the natural world.
Kids in Wilderness Academy build independence, problem-solving skills, and resilience in ways a traditional classroom setting simply can’t replicate. If you have a kid who comes alive outside, this program is worth a serious look.
Like El Puente, Wilderness Academy placement is also by lottery due to high demand and limited availability.
For families who need flexibility, JIA Elementary is Jenison’s public hybrid virtual option. It’s a smaller, more personalized program — but it’s still fully part of the JPS family.
JIA is a great fit for families with unique scheduling needs, kids who do well with more independent learning structures, or parents who want to be more directly involved in their child’s day-to-day education without fully stepping away from the public school system.
Here’s the exciting part Jenison isn’t just maintaining what it has. It’s actively investing in the future.
In May 2024, the Jenison community passed a $117 million bond to fund several major district improvements. The centerpiece project is a brand new 168,000 square foot upper elementary building dedicated to 5th and 6th graders — projected to open Fall 2029.
The new building will bring all fifth and sixth graders from across the district together on the main campus, and it’s being designed with 21st-century learning in mind:
When the new building opens, it will also free up space in the existing elementary buildings for TK through 4th grade — a win for the whole district.
Superintendent Dr. Brandon Graham put it simply: “The Jenison community has been amazing over the years and has seen the value in having an excellent school system.”
That sentiment is something I hear from families here all the time. This is a community that shows up for its kids.
I’ve lived here, raised my girls here, and helped a lot of families find their way into this community. Understanding the school options is just one piece of the puzzle — knowing which neighborhoods put your kids in which schools, what the market looks like right now, and how to navigate a move-up or relocation is where I come in.
