“Jenison is kind of out of the way, isn’t it?”
It’s one of the most common things I hear from families considering a move-up here. And I get it — if you’ve never lived here, the name doesn’t exactly come with a map. But here’s what the people who actually live in Jenison know that most outsiders don’t: twenty minutes gets you almost everything.
Let me walk you through it.
Jenison sits in Georgetown Township, just west of Grand Rapids. And yes, it’s not downtown. But “far” is relative, and once you live here, the math changes fast.
From most Jenison neighborhoods, you’re looking at:
20 minutes to downtown Grand Rapids. The restaurants, the venues, the events. All of it.
10–15 minutes to Rivertown Crossings, Costco, and the major shopping corridors.
Easy access to US-131 and I-196, which means you can get north, south, or east without fighting city traffic.
Byron Center, Hudsonville, and Holland are all reachable in under 25 minutes.
The families I work with stop thinking about the commute after about two weeks. It just becomes normal — and then they can’t imagine paying more for a smaller lot closer to the city.
This is the part that surprises people the most. Jenison isn’t a destination on the way to somewhere else. It has its own ecosystem.
Grocery stores, pharmacies, and every-day errands. You rarely need to leave for the basics.
Jenison Public Schools. One of the most consistent reasons families choose to move up within the district instead of moving out of it.
Local parks and outdoor space. The kind of neighborhoods where kids can actually be outside.
Coffee shops, local restaurants, and the kind of community feel that you can’t manufacture in a newer development.
I’ve had clients who moved here from Grand Rapids and Kentwood specifically because they wanted more yard, better schools, and a quieter street — without giving up their access to the city. They got all three.
If you’re currently in Jenison and thinking about moving up — or if you’ve been comparing Jenison to Byron Center, Hudsonville, or somewhere in Grand Rapids — here’s the honest version.
In neighborhoods like Lowing Woods, Wallin Estates, Berger Estates, and Cedar Lake, you can get 2,000+ square feet, a larger lot, an open concept layout, and a primary suite — often for less than a comparable home in closer-in Grand Rapids suburbs.
You’re not trading access for space. You’re getting both.
And if you already live in Jenison? This might be the best news you’ll read today. The life you’ve built here — the schools, the community, the neighbors who just show up — you don’t have to leave any of it behind to get the house that actually fits.
Most of the move-up buyers I’m working with right now aren’t leaving Jenison. They’re moving within it.
They’ve outgrown the 1960s ranch off Baldwin. The closed kitchen doesn’t work anymore. The kids need their own space. And they’ve been Zillow-scrolling Lowing Woods and Wallin Estates long enough to know exactly what they want.
The location question isn’t what’s holding them back. It’s the logistics — how to sell and buy at the same time, what their equity actually gets them, and whether the monthly payment difference is as scary as it feels.
Once we work through that together, the decision usually gets a lot clearer.
If you’re wondering whether Jenison is the right place to move up:
If you want the city close but not in your backyard → Jenison works.
If you want space, schools, and community without starting over → Jenison works.
If you’re already here and just need more house → you don’t have to go anywhere.
Twenty minutes gets you a lot. You just have to know where to look.
If you’ve been wondering whether the move-up actually makes sense for your family — the numbers, the timing, the neighborhoods — the Move-Up Guide is a good place to start. It walks through the whole process clearly, without pressure.
